Test code DL 1266 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Urea is a substance formed by the breakdown of proteins in the body and excreted by the kidneys. It is used together with creatinine to evaluate kidney function; it can also be affected by inadequate fluid intake and a high-protein diet.

When is it requested?

Monitoring of chronic kidney disease, assessment of nitrogen balance

What does a high Urea result mean?

High urea (BUN) is often linked to not drinking enough fluids or a high-protein diet; it can also rise when the kidneys filter less effectively.

  • Fluid loss from low water intake, diarrhea, vomiting or heavy sweating (dehydration)
  • High-protein diet or protein supplements
  • Certain medicines (e.g., diuretics, corticosteroids)
  • Fever, severe infection or significant tissue breakdown
  • Reduced blood flow to the kidneys due to heart failure
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines
  • Acute or chronic kidney failure

What does a low Urea result mean?

Low urea is usually not significant; it most often reflects a low-protein diet or high fluid intake and only rarely points to liver disease.

  • Low-protein or vegetarian diet
  • High fluid intake
  • Pregnancy (increased blood volume)
  • Malnutrition or poor absorption
  • Advanced liver disease (reduced urea production)

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

Urea is interpreted together with creatinine and eGFR, not alone. Come to the test well hydrated; if it is high, your doctor may repeat it or order further tests.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
