Triglycerides

Test code DL 1245 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Triglycerides are a type of fat in the blood. Because they are affected by the most recent meal, they are usually measured after 10–12 hours of fasting. High triglycerides are associated with cardiovascular disease risk and, in some cases, with inflammation of the pancreas.

When is it requested?

Lipid metabolism disorders, treatment monitoring

What does a high Triglycerides result mean?

High triglycerides are mostly linked to diet, alcohol and weight; eating before the test also raises the result markedly. Very high levels pose a risk to the pancreas.

  • Not fasting long enough before the test
  • Alcohol in the days before the test
  • Diet high in sugar, sweets and refined carbohydrates
  • Excess weight, insulin resistance, uncontrolled diabetes
  • Underactive thyroid or kidney disease
  • Pregnancy, or certain medicines such as estrogen or corticosteroids
  • Inherited lipid disorders

What does a low Triglycerides result mean?

Low triglycerides usually don't indicate a problem; they often reflect a healthy diet or the effect of treatment.

  • Low-fat, low-sugar diet
  • Weight loss and regular exercise
  • Lipid-lowering medicines
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • Malnutrition or absorption problems

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

For an accurate result, fast for 10–12 hours and avoid alcohol the day before. If high, your doctor may repeat the test and interpret it together with your other lipid values.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
