What is this test for?

The presence of the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism is associated with reduced methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme activity and elevated homocysteine levels. This association is reported to be stronger particularly in the homozygous form. It should be evaluated together with other risk factors. It is the tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor. Because increased PAI-1 activation inhibits fibrinolysis, increased clotting is seen. The homozygous 4G allele increases the risk of coagulation and platelet aggregation. Individuals carrying this allele have an increased CAD risk compared with homozygous 5G individuals.
