What is this test?
Testosterone is a hormone produced by the testes in men and, in small amounts, by the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. It is used to investigate low energy and libido in men, and increased hair growth and menstrual irregularities in women. A morning sample is recommended.
When is it requested?
Androgen deficiency, precocious or delayed puberty, treatment monitoring
What does a high testosterone result mean?
In women, high testosterone is most often linked to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In men, a high level is usually due to hormone or steroid use.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women
- Testosterone therapy or anabolic steroid use
- High carrier protein (SHBG), e.g., with an overactive thyroid
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Rarely, hormone-producing tumors of the ovary, testis or adrenal gland
What does a low testosterone result mean?
In men, low testosterone can cause fatigue, low drive and low libido; excess weight, poor sleep and an afternoon blood draw can also lower the value.
- Blood drawn in the afternoon (levels peak in the morning)
- Excess weight, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
- Lack of sleep, sleep apnea or severe stress
- Gradual decline with age
- Acute illness, opioids or corticosteroid medicines
- Underactive testes (hypogonadism)
- Pituitary disorders or high prolactin
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Have blood drawn between 08:30 and 10:30 in the morning; in men a low result is usually confirmed with a second morning test. Ranges for women and men are very different; your doctor will interpret it using your report's range.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
