What is this test?
Sodium is a key electrolyte that regulates the body's fluid balance and nerve and muscle function. Fluid loss, kidney disease, certain hormonal disorders and medications can affect sodium levels.
When is it requested?
Electrolyte metabolism disorders, renal failure, diuretic therapy
What does a high Sodium result mean?
High sodium (hypernatremia) is most often due to the body losing water or not taking in enough water.
- Not drinking enough water, especially reduced thirst in older adults
- Fluid loss from diarrhea, vomiting, fever or heavy sweating
- Water loss from burns or rapid breathing
- Certain medicines or salt-containing IV fluids
- Excess water loss in urine with uncontrolled diabetes
- Diabetes insipidus (lack of, or resistance to, the water-retaining hormone)
What does a low Sodium result mean?
Low sodium (hyponatremia) usually means there is too much water relative to sodium in the body; medicines and fluid losses are common causes.
- Drinking a very large amount of water in a short time
- Medicines such as diuretics and some antidepressants
- Salt loss through vomiting, diarrhea or heavy sweating
- Fluid buildup in heart failure, cirrhosis or kidney disease
- Inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH), e.g., in lung or brain conditions
- Underactive thyroid or adrenal insufficiency
- Very high blood sugar or blood fats (can distort the measurement)
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Sodium changes usually result from an underlying condition; show your result and your medication list to your doctor. Seek prompt care for marked changes, especially with confusion or weakness.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
