What is this test?
Rheumatoid factor is an antibody found in the blood in some rheumatic diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis. It is evaluated together with other tests in people with joint pain and swelling; it can also be weakly positive in healthy individuals.
When is it requested?
Rheumatoid arthritis, collagen diseases, chronic polyarthritis
What does a high RF result mean?
A high RF is common in rheumatoid arthritis but can also be positive in other conditions and in healthy people, especially older adults; it is not a diagnosis alone.
- Older age (low-level positivity in healthy older adults)
- Current viral or bacterial infections
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Other autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome or lupus
- Hepatitis C and chronic liver disease
- Chronic lung diseases
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
A negative RF does not rule out rheumatoid arthritis, and a high RF alone does not confirm it. If you have joint symptoms, your doctor will assess it with anti-CCP, CRP and an exam.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
