What is this test?
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland. It can rise with prostate enlargement, prostate inflammation and prostate cancer. It is used to monitor prostate health in men over 40–50; results should always be reviewed with a physician.
When is it requested?
Diagnosis and treatment monitoring of prostate cancer
What does a high PSA result mean?
A high PSA indicates a change in the prostate; the most common causes are benign prostate enlargement and prostate inflammation. A high PSA does not mean cancer.
- Benign, age-related prostate enlargement (BPH)
- Sexual activity/ejaculation within 48 hours before the test
- Cycling or intense exercise that puts pressure on the prostate
- Prostate inflammation (prostatitis) or urinary tract infection
- Urinary catheter, cystoscopy, prostate exam or biopsy
- Prostate cancer
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Avoid sex and cycling for 2 days before the test, and tell your doctor about drugs for prostate enlargement or hair loss, which can lower PSA. A high result is usually repeated and reviewed by a urologist with free PSA, an exam and imaging if needed.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
