What is this test for?
Used to determine the cause of hyper- or hypokalemia. Decreased K+ excretion in acute kidney disease and end-stage renal failure are common causes of prolonged hyperkalemia. Renal potassium loss may occur in the diuretic phase of acute tubular necrosis, during non-potassium-sparing diuretic therapy, and in states of mineralocorticoid or glucocorticoid excess.
