We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

LH is a pituitary hormone that triggers ovulation and regulates the production of sex hormones. Together with FSH, it is evaluated in the investigation of menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility.

When is it requested?

Ovarian and testicular failure, onset of menopause

What does a high LH result mean?

High LH is normal around ovulation. A high level early in the cycle may suggest PCOS, menopause or reduced ovarian or testicular function.

  • Natural pre-ovulation LH surge
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (raised LH/FSH ratio)
  • Menopause or the menopausal transition
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency
  • Underactive testes in men (primary hypogonadism)
  • Genetic conditions such as Klinefelter or Turner syndrome

What does a low LH result mean?

Low LH may mean the pituitary is not stimulating sex hormone production enough; it is expected with hormonal medicines and during pregnancy.

  • Birth control pills or other hormone therapies
  • Pregnancy
  • Excessive weight loss, intense exercise or stress
  • Anabolic steroid or testosterone use
  • High prolactin level
  • Underactive pituitary or hypothalamus

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

LH varies greatly with the cycle day; it is usually ordered with FSH on day 2–3 of the cycle. Share your result with your doctor along with your cycle day and other hormone results.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
