What is this test?
Total IgE shows the total amount in the blood of the antibody involved in allergic reactions. It rises in allergic diseases and some parasitic infections; it does not show which substance you are allergic to — specific IgE tests or allergy panels such as Alex2 are used for that.
When is it requested?
Allergic diseases, treatment monitoring
What does a high IgE result mean?
High total IgE is linked to an allergic tendency or conditions such as parasitic infection; it does not show what you are allergic to.
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and allergic asthma
- Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- Food or drug allergies
- Smoking
- Intestinal parasites
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA)
- Rare immune system disorders (e.g., hyper-IgE syndrome)
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
A normal total IgE does not rule out allergy, and a high value alone does not diagnose one. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may order specific IgE or an allergy panel.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
