What is this test?
HOMA-IR is an index calculated from fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin values. It shows how sensitive the body is to insulin, i.e. whether insulin resistance is present. For this reason, it is performed on a fasting blood sample.
When is it requested?
Assessment of insulin resistance
What does a high HOMA-IR result mean?
A high HOMA-IR means your body responds less well to insulin, suggesting insulin resistance; it often improves with lifestyle changes.
- Not fasting long enough before the test
- Excess weight, especially around the waist
- Physical inactivity, poor sleep and stress
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and fatty liver
- Pregnancy or certain medicines such as corticosteroids
- Prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
What does a low HOMA-IR result mean?
A low HOMA-IR usually indicates good insulin sensitivity and in most cases is not a cause for concern.
- Regular exercise and a healthy weight
- Prolonged fasting
- Falsely low insulin due to hemolysis in the sample
- Low insulin production by the pancreas (type 1 or advanced type 2 diabetes)
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
There is no single HOMA-IR cut-off that fits everyone; it depends on age, weight and method. Review the result with your doctor alongside your blood sugar and other findings.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
