What is this test?
This test looks for Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with stomach ulcers and gastritis, in a stool sample. Because, unlike a blood test, it shows active infection, it is used both for diagnosis and to check whether the bacterium has been eradicated after treatment.
When is it requested?
Peptic ulcers (stomach and duodenal ulcers), chronic gastritis, and treatment effectiveness
What does a positive H. pylori stool antigen result mean?
A positive result means there is a current Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach. This common bacterium can cause gastritis and ulcers; your doctor decides on treatment.
- Current (active) Helicobacter pylori infection
- Bacteria not fully cleared after treatment
- Post-treatment check done too early
- Reinfection (rare)
What does a negative H. pylori stool antigen result mean?
A negative result means no H. pylori antigen was found in the stool, so an active infection is unlikely.
- No infection
- Bacteria successfully cleared after treatment
- Acid-reducing drugs (PPIs) in the last 2 weeks (false negative)
- Antibiotics or bismuth in the last 4 weeks (false negative)
- Active stomach bleeding or improper sample storage
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Stop PPIs at least 2 weeks and antibiotics at least 4 weeks before the test, but only with your doctor's approval. Post-treatment testing should be done at least 4 weeks after finishing treatment.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
