What is this test?
HbA1c reflects the average blood sugar level over the past 2–3 months. Because it is not affected by daily fluctuations, no fasting is required. It is used to diagnose diabetes and to monitor treatment in people with diabetes.
When is it requested?
Monitoring of diabetes mellitus treatment
What does a high HbA1c result mean?
A high HbA1c means your blood sugar has averaged high over the past 2–3 months, suggesting prediabetes or diabetes; some blood conditions can also raise it.
- Prediabetes
- Diabetes, or diabetes that is not well controlled
- Iron deficiency anemia (falsely high result)
- Kidney failure
- Having had the spleen removed (red cells live longer)
- Certain hemoglobin variants (depending on the test method)
What does a low HbA1c result mean?
A low HbA1c is usually related to a shortened red blood cell lifespan; in people treated for diabetes it can also reflect frequent low blood sugar episodes.
- Recent blood loss or blood transfusion
- Pregnancy
- Anemias with increased red cell breakdown (hemolytic anemia)
- Recently started treatment for iron, B12 or other anemia
- Frequent low blood sugar episodes during diabetes treatment
- Chronic liver disease or certain hemoglobin variants
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
No fasting is needed for HbA1c. Anemia, kidney disease or a hemoglobin variant can make the result misleading; your doctor may combine it with fasting glucose or other tests.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
