Test code DL 387 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

GGT is an enzyme associated with the liver and bile ducts. It can rise with bile duct obstruction, liver disease, regular alcohol use and certain medications. When evaluated together with ALP, it helps identify the source of an elevation.

When is it requested?

Differential diagnosis of liver and bile duct diseases

What does a high GGT result mean?

A high GGT may indicate that the liver or bile ducts are affected; alcohol and some medicines can raise GGT even without liver disease.

  • Regular alcohol use
  • Fatty liver and excess weight
  • Certain medicines (e.g., epilepsy drugs) and smoking
  • Gallstones or blocked bile ducts
  • Liver diseases such as hepatitis
  • Diabetes or pancreatic disease

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

GGT is not specific on its own and is interpreted together with ALP and other liver tests. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use and medicines; the test may be repeated if needed.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
