What is this test?
FSH is a pituitary hormone that regulates the function of the ovaries and testes. In women, it is used to evaluate ovarian reserve, menopause and menstrual irregularities; in men, problems related to sperm production. In women, it is usually ordered on day 2–3 of the menstrual cycle.
When is it requested?
Infertility, menstrual cycle disorders, onset of menopause
What does a high FSH result mean?
High FSH may mean the ovaries or testes are not responding well to the pituitary signal. In women, the value varies with the day of the menstrual cycle.
- Ovulation (a normal mid-cycle surge)
- Menopause or the menopausal transition (perimenopause)
- Reduced ovarian reserve
- Primary ovarian insufficiency (before age 40)
- Reduced sperm production in the testes in men
- After chemotherapy or radiotherapy; genetic conditions such as Turner or Klinefelter
What does a low FSH result mean?
Low FSH may mean the pituitary is not stimulating the ovaries or testes enough; it is normally low on birth control pills and during pregnancy.
- Birth control pills or hormone therapies
- Pregnancy
- Significant weight loss, intense exercise or severe stress
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS; FSH normal-low, LH relatively high)
- Anabolic steroid or testosterone use
- Underactive pituitary or hypothalamus
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
In women FSH is usually measured on day 2–3 of the cycle and read with cycle day, age, E2, LH and AMH. Tell your doctor about any hormone medicines.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
