Test code DL 368 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is essential for cell renewal and blood cell production. Deficiency can cause anemia; folate is also important for fetal development before and during pregnancy. It is usually ordered together with vitamin B12.

When is it requested?

Diagnosis of folate deficiency anemia

What does a high folic acid result mean?

High folate is usually due to supplements or a folate-rich diet and generally does not indicate a problem.

  • Folic acid supplements or multivitamins
  • Fortified foods or a diet rich in leafy green vegetables
  • Eating shortly before the test
  • B12 deficiency (folate builds up in the blood because cells can't use it)

What does a low folic acid result mean?

Low folate is linked to low intake or increased needs; if prolonged it can cause anemia, and it matters for the baby's development in pregnancy.

  • Diet low in leafy greens, legumes and fruit
  • Increased needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Regular alcohol use
  • Certain medicines (e.g., methotrexate, some epilepsy drugs)
  • Absorption problems such as celiac disease
  • Anemias with increased red cell breakdown (hemolytic anemia)

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

Serum folate reflects recent diet, so fasting before the test is recommended. Interpret it together with B12, and talk to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
