Ferritin

Test code DL 363 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Ferritin is a protein that reflects the body's iron stores. Low ferritin usually indicates depleted iron stores, i.e. iron deficiency; high ferritin may be seen with iron overload, inflammation or liver disease. When investigating the cause of anemia, it is evaluated together with serum iron and iron-binding capacity.

When is it requested?

Differential diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia, iron overload, iron malabsorption

What does a high Ferritin result mean?

High ferritin does not always mean too much iron; ferritin is also a protein that rises during inflammation and infection.

  • Infection, inflammation or a recent illness
  • Fatty liver, excess weight and metabolic syndrome
  • Regular alcohol use
  • Iron supplements taken too long or at high doses, frequent blood transfusions
  • Liver diseases such as hepatitis
  • Inherited iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis)
  • Less commonly, certain rheumatic diseases or cancers

What does a low Ferritin result mean?

Low ferritin means your body's iron stores are depleted and is one of the most reliable signs of iron deficiency; it can drop even before anemia develops.

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Increased iron needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Low-iron diet, vegetarian or vegan eating
  • Frequent blood donation
  • Rapid growth in children and teenagers
  • Absorption problems such as celiac disease, or after stomach surgery
  • Unnoticed blood loss from the digestive tract

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

Because ferritin can look normal during inflammation, it is interpreted together with serum iron, iron-binding capacity and sometimes CRP. Don't start iron supplements on your own; review the result with your doctor.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
