Fecal Occult Blood (FOB)

Test code DL 383 · Stool

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

The fecal occult blood test checks for blood in the stool that is not visible to the naked eye. It is a simple test used in colorectal (colon) cancer screening and in the investigation of gastrointestinal bleeding; regular screening is recommended for people over 50.

When is it requested?

Erythrocytes in stool

What does a positive fecal occult blood result mean?

A positive result means there is bleeding somewhere in the digestive tract; it is often due to simple causes, but the source should be investigated with a colonoscopy.

  • Hemorrhoids or an anal fissure
  • Menstrual blood mixing with the sample
  • Stomach or bowel irritation from aspirin and other painkillers
  • Colon polyps
  • Ulcers or inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis)
  • Colorectal cancer

What does a negative fecal occult blood result mean?

A negative result means no hidden blood was found; because polyps and tumors may bleed intermittently, it does not completely rule out disease.

  • No bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Blood from the upper digestive tract is broken down (immunochemical tests target the lower bowel)
  • A polyp or tumor not bleeding at the time of the test
  • Improper sample collection or late delivery

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

Do not collect the sample during your period or while hemorrhoids are bleeding; after a positive result your doctor will recommend a colonoscopy, and a negative test is repeated at recommended screening intervals. See a doctor about symptoms like rectal bleeding regardless of the result.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
