Test code DL 340 · Whole Blood (EDTA) · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measures how far red blood cells settle in a tube over a set period of time. It increases when there is inflammation, infection or certain chronic diseases in the body. It is not diagnostic on its own and is evaluated together with other findings.

When is it requested?

Rheumatic diseases, febrile infections

What does a high ESR result mean?

A high ESR (sed rate) suggests inflammation or certain chronic conditions; age, female sex, anemia and pregnancy can also raise it.

  • Older age and female sex (naturally higher)
  • Pregnancy and menstruation
  • Anemia
  • Current or recent infections
  • Rheumatic and autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia)
  • Kidney disease or high cholesterol
  • Conditions that raise blood proteins, such as multiple myeloma

What does a low ESR result mean?

A low ESR is generally not significant and is usually considered normal; rarely it is linked to certain blood disorders.

  • Normal variation
  • High red blood cell count (polycythemia)
  • Red cell shape disorders such as sickle cell disease
  • Low blood protein (fibrinogen) levels
  • Pre-analytical factors such as delayed testing of the sample

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

ESR is a non-specific test; it does not diagnose anything alone and is read together with CRP and other findings. It can stay high for weeks after an illness, so your doctor may recheck it.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
