Test code DL 343 · Serum · Fasting sample recommended

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Estradiol is the main estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries in women. It is used to evaluate ovarian function, the menstrual cycle, IVF treatment and menopause.

When is it requested?

Evaluation of ovarian function, ovulation monitoring, gynecomastia, estrogen-producing tumors

What does a high E2 result mean?

High estradiol is normal before ovulation; pregnancy and hormone treatments also raise it. In men and after menopause, a high level is investigated.

  • Pre-ovulation and luteal phase (natural cycle-related rise)
  • Pregnancy
  • Ovarian stimulation during IVF treatment
  • Estrogen-containing medicines or hormone therapy
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Excess weight or liver disease in men
  • Rarely, estrogen-producing ovarian, testicular or adrenal tumors

What does a low E2 result mean?

Low estradiol is normal after menopause and in the first days of a period; in women of reproductive age it may suggest reduced ovarian function.

  • First days of the period (early follicular phase)
  • Menopause
  • Birth control pills (the body's own production is suppressed)
  • Very low body weight, intense exercise or stress
  • Breastfeeding
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency
  • Underactive pituitary gland

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

Estradiol changes greatly across the cycle, so the result must be read with the day the blood was drawn. Biotin supplements can affect some assays; ask your doctor before the test.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
