What is this test?
CRP is a protein rapidly produced by the liver when there is inflammation in the body. It is used to detect infections and inflammatory diseases and to monitor response to treatment.
When is it requested?
Inflammation, rheumatic diseases
What does a high CRP result mean?
High CRP shows there is inflammation in the body but not its cause. Mild rises are common; a marked rise most often points to an infection.
- Common infections such as a cold, sore throat or urinary tract infection
- Recent surgery, injury or dental work
- Excess weight, smoking and inactivity (mild rise)
- Pregnancy and birth control pills (mild rise)
- Bacterial infections (e.g., pneumonia)
- Autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease
- Some cancers or severe tissue damage
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
CRP alone does not make a diagnosis; it is interpreted with your symptoms and examination. It can take days to fall after an infection, so your doctor may repeat it.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
