What is this test for?
The dexamethasone suppression test is performed both to diagnose Cushing's syndrome and to identify the source of elevated cortisol. There are two forms of this test. 1. High-dose (8 mg) dexamethasone suppression test: used to diagnose Cushing's syndrome. 2. Low-dose (1 mg) dexamethasone suppression test: used to differentiate elevated cortisol caused by a pituitary adenoma (benign tumor).
