Complete Blood Count, 24 Parameters (CBC)

Test code DL 1404 · Whole Blood (EDTA)

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

A complete blood count (CBC) measures red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes) and platelets, along with hemoglobin, hematocrit and red cell size indices, in a single test. It is the most frequently ordered test in routine check-ups and in the initial evaluation of anemia, infection, inflammation and certain blood disorders.

When is it requested?

Investigation of hematologic disorders, infections, blood loss

What does a high complete blood count (CBC) result mean?

A CBC value above the reference range on your report means different things depending on which parameter it is; often it reflects a temporary, harmless cause.

  • High white blood cells (WBC): most often infection or inflammation; stress and smoking can also raise it
  • High hemoglobin/hematocrit: frequently dehydration or smoking
  • Steroid (cortisone-type) medicines can temporarily raise the white cell count
  • High platelets (PLT): infection, inflammation, iron deficiency or after blood loss
  • High eosinophils: allergies, asthma or intestinal parasites
  • Long-term lung disease or living at high altitude: increased red blood cells
  • Less commonly, blood disorders involving the bone marrow

What does a low complete blood count (CBC) result mean?

Low CBC values are most often seen in hemoglobin (anemia); low white cells or platelets are frequently linked to a passing infection or a medication effect.

  • Low hemoglobin (anemia): most often iron deficiency; B12 or folate deficiency can also cause it
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, pregnancy or unnoticed blood loss
  • Low white blood cells: may be temporary during viral infections such as the flu
  • Low platelets: viral infections, or platelet clumping in the tube (falsely low count)
  • Certain medicines (e.g., some antibiotics, chemotherapy) can lower blood cell counts
  • Chronic kidney or liver disease
  • Less commonly, bone marrow disorders

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

A CBC is interpreted as a whole, together with your symptoms; a slight change in a single value is often not significant. Share your results with your doctor, who may repeat the test or order further tests.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
