What is this test?
Total cholesterol shows the sum of all cholesterol in the blood. It is evaluated together with HDL, LDL and triglycerides as a lipid profile and is used to determine cardiovascular disease risk.
When is it requested?
Primary and secondary lipid metabolism disorders, assessment of atherosclerosis risk
What does a high total cholesterol result mean?
High total cholesterol can increase heart and blood vessel disease risk, but its meaning depends on the HDL and LDL breakdown, so it isn't interpreted alone.
- Diet high in saturated fat and processed foods
- Physical inactivity and excess weight
- Family (inherited) tendency
- Pregnancy and menopause
- Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Certain medicines such as corticosteroids, diabetes or kidney disease
What does a low total cholesterol result mean?
Low total cholesterol usually doesn't indicate a problem; it is an expected result in people on cholesterol-lowering treatment.
- Cholesterol-lowering medicines
- Low-fat diet or weight loss
- Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
- Malnutrition or absorption problems
- Liver disease or long-term serious illness
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Total cholesterol is interpreted together with HDL, LDL and triglycerides and your personal risk factors. A 10–12 hour fast is usually advised for a lipid panel; treatment decisions are up to your doctor.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
