What is this test?
LDL is commonly known as 'bad cholesterol'; when elevated, it can build up in artery walls and lead to hardening of the arteries. It is one of the most important values for assessing cardiovascular risk and monitoring cholesterol-lowering treatment.
When is it requested?
Assessment of atherosclerosis risk, treatment indication and monitoring
What does a high LDL cholesterol result mean?
High LDL ('bad cholesterol') raises the long-term risk of hardened arteries and heart disease; the target level depends on your overall risk.
- Diet high in saturated and trans fats
- Excess weight and physical inactivity
- Familial (inherited) high cholesterol
- Pregnancy and menopause
- Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Diabetes or kidney disease
- Medicines such as corticosteroids or some diuretics
What does a low LDL cholesterol result mean?
Low LDL is usually a favorable result; it is expected in people on cholesterol-lowering treatment and rarely needs further investigation.
- Cholesterol-lowering medicines
- Low-fat diet and weight loss
- Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
- Malnutrition or absorption problems
- Liver disease
- Rarely, inherited lipid disorders
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
If LDL is calculated, the result is less reliable when triglycerides are very high, and a direct LDL measurement may be ordered. Your doctor decides whether treatment is needed.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
