What is this test?
HDL is commonly known as 'good cholesterol'; it helps remove excess cholesterol from the arteries. Low HDL increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular exercise can help raise HDL levels.
When is it requested?
Assessment of atherosclerosis risk
What does a high HDL cholesterol result mean?
High HDL ('good cholesterol') is generally considered favorable and is associated with lower heart risk; very high values are rarely evaluated further.
- Regular exercise and an active lifestyle
- Inherited tendency
- Effect of estrogen in women
- Quitting smoking and losing weight
- Alcohol use
- Rarely, certain liver diseases or inherited lipid disorders
What does a low HDL cholesterol result mean?
Low HDL is a factor that increases heart and blood vessel disease risk; it is often linked to lifestyle and insulin resistance.
- Smoking
- Physical inactivity and fat around the waist
- High triglycerides and insulin resistance
- Type 2 diabetes
- Diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar
- Inherited tendency

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
HDL is evaluated together with your other lipid values and risk factors. Regular exercise, quitting smoking and weight control can help raise HDL; discuss the result with your doctor.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
