What is this test?
CEA is a tumor marker. It is used mainly to monitor treatment in patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Because it can be mildly elevated in smokers and in some benign conditions, it is not a screening test on its own.
When is it requested?
Monitoring of patients with colon, breast and gastric cancer; assessment of recurrence after treatment
What does a high CEA result mean?
A mildly high CEA is common in smokers and in several benign conditions; a high value alone does not mean cancer and the test is not used for screening.
- Smoking
- Liver disease (e.g., cirrhosis, hepatitis)
- Inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis or stomach ulcer
- Chronic lung disease (COPD, bronchitis)
- Kidney failure or underactive thyroid
- Colorectal cancer and certain other cancers
- Recurrence of disease during follow-up after cancer treatment
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
CEA is most useful for monitoring treatment in people already diagnosed with cancer; the trend over time matters more than one value. Follow-up tests are best done at the same lab; review results with your doctor.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
