What is this test?
Bilirubin is a yellow substance formed from the breakdown of aging red blood cells and excreted into bile by the liver. High bilirubin can cause yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice); it is used to evaluate liver, bile duct and certain blood disorders.
When is it requested?
Liver and blood diseases
What does a high Bilirubin result mean?
High bilirubin is most often due to Gilbert syndrome, a harmless inherited condition; it can also occur with liver, bile duct or red cell breakdown problems.
- Gilbert syndrome (harmless; more noticeable with fasting, stress and illness)
- Prolonged fasting or fatigue
- Newborn jaundice
- Rapid breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis)
- Liver involvement from hepatitis, alcohol or medicines
- Gallstones or blocked bile ducts
- Less commonly, cirrhosis or pancreatic/bile duct tumors
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
If high, your doctor will look at direct and indirect bilirubin and other liver tests to find the cause. See a doctor if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
