What is this test?
Beta-hCG is the hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. Measuring it in blood detects pregnancy earlier and more reliably than a urine test; it is also used to monitor the first weeks of pregnancy.
When is it requested?
Diagnosis of pregnancy, hydatidiform mole, choriocarcinoma, testicular tumors
What does a high Beta-hCG result mean?
A raised beta-hCG most often means pregnancy. Whether a pregnancy is progressing normally is judged by the rise between tests 48–72 hours apart, not a single value.
- Normal pregnancy
- Twin or multiple pregnancy (usually higher values)
- Recent miscarriage, abortion or delivery (levels can take weeks to fall)
- hCG injections used in IVF treatment
- Ectopic pregnancy (the rise is usually slower than expected)
- Molar pregnancy or certain rare tumors
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
A positive result does not show where the pregnancy is; your doctor will use ultrasound and repeat tests, and you should seek care promptly for pelvic pain or bleeding. A test done very early may be negative and can be repeated in a few days.

Preparation
In patients receiving high-dose biotin therapy (>5 mg/day), samples must not be collected until at least 8 hours after the last biotin dose. Heat-inactivated and azide-stabilized samples must not be used.
