What is this test?
AST is an enzyme found in the liver as well as in heart and skeletal muscle. It is used together with ALT to evaluate liver function; it can also rise temporarily after strenuous exercise.
When is it requested?
Differential diagnosis of liver, bile duct, heart and skeletal muscle diseases
What does a high AST result mean?
A high AST can come from the liver but also from muscle or the heart, so it is interpreted together with ALT and other tests.
- Intense exercise, muscle strain or an intramuscular injection
- Breakdown of red cells in the sample (hemolysis), a falsely high result
- Fatty liver
- Alcohol use (AST is often clearly higher than ALT)
- Medicines and herbal products
- Viral hepatitis or other liver diseases
- Muscle disorders, underactive thyroid or heart muscle damage
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Avoiding strenuous exercise for 2–3 days before the test makes the result more reliable. If AST is high, your doctor may look for the source with tests such as ALT, GGT or CK.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
