What is this test?
ASO measures the antibody produced against group A streptococcus bacteria. It is used to investigate a recent streptococcal infection (such as certain throat infections) and related joint or kidney problems.
When is it requested?
Acute rheumatic fever, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis
What does a high ASO result mean?
A high ASO shows a group A strep infection in recent weeks or months; on its own it does not mean disease or a need for treatment.
- Recent strep throat
- Strep skin infections
- Frequent strep exposure in school-age children (high values are common)
- Strep carrier state
- Acute rheumatic fever
- Post-strep kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis)
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
ASO can stay high for months; in someone without symptoms a high ASO usually needs no treatment. With joint pain or urine changes, your doctor will run more tests, sometimes repeating ASO in 2–4 weeks.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
