What is this test?
Anti-TPO is an antibody produced by the immune system against the thyroid gland. Elevated levels suggest autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Even when TSH is normal, it helps assess the risk of developing thyroid problems in the future.
When is it requested?
Hashimoto's thyroiditis, atrophic thyroiditis, postpartum thyroiditis, Graves' disease
What does a high Anti-TPO result mean?
A high anti-TPO means the immune system is making antibodies against the thyroid; it is most often seen in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and can occur even with normal thyroid function.
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the most common cause)
- Healthy people without thyroid disease, especially women and older adults
- Graves' disease
- Thyroid inflammation after childbirth (postpartum thyroiditis)
- Family history of autoimmune thyroid disease
- Other autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes, celiac disease or vitiligo
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
A positive anti-TPO alone does not require treatment; your doctor will evaluate it with TSH and free T4 and may recommend regular follow-up. Share this result with your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
