What is this test?
Anti-Tg is an antibody directed against thyroglobulin, a protein in the thyroid gland. It is used together with anti-TPO in the investigation of autoimmune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto's, Graves').
When is it requested?
Diagnosis of autoimmune thyroiditis
What does a high Anti-Tg result mean?
A high anti-Tg indicates an autoimmune response against the thyroid; it is most often seen in Hashimoto's and Graves' disease but can also be found in healthy people.
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis
- Graves' disease
- Healthy people without thyroid disease, especially women
- Family history of autoimmune thyroid disease
- Follow-up after thyroid cancer treatment (can affect thyroglobulin measurement)
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
Anti-Tg is interpreted together with anti-TPO, TSH and free T4; it does not establish a diagnosis on its own. If you are being followed for thyroid cancer, your treating doctor should review it.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
