Anti-HCV

Test code DL 106 · Serum

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

Anti-HCV detects antibodies against the hepatitis C virus. A positive result indicates exposure to the virus; additional tests (HCV RNA PCR) are usually needed to determine whether the infection is active.

When is it requested?

Suspected acute or chronic hepatitis C infection

What does a positive Anti-HCV result mean?

A positive anti-HCV means you were exposed to the hepatitis C virus at some point; it does not by itself mean active infection. An HCV RNA test is needed to confirm.

  • Past infection that cleared on its own
  • Successfully treated hepatitis C (antibodies can stay positive for years)
  • False positive (especially low-signal results, autoimmune disease or pregnancy)
  • Ongoing (active) hepatitis C infection

What does a negative Anti-HCV result mean?

A negative anti-HCV usually means you have not been exposed to the hepatitis C virus.

  • No exposure to hepatitis C (most common)
  • Antibodies fading over many years after a past, cleared infection (rare)
  • Very recent exposure; antibodies take weeks to months to develop (window period)
  • False negative with severe immunosuppression or dialysis (rare)

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

After a positive result your doctor will order an HCV RNA (PCR) test; hepatitis C is now curable in most cases. If you had a recent risky exposure, repeat a negative test after a few months.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
