AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

Test code DL 043 · Serum

We will e-mail you the prices and preparation instructions for the tests on your list.

What is this test?

AMH is a hormone that reflects the egg reserve in the ovaries. Because it is largely unaffected by the menstrual cycle, the sample can be given on any day of the month. It is used in pregnancy planning, IVF treatment and the evaluation of early menopause.

When is it requested?

Evaluation of menopausal status and investigation of ovarian insufficiency

What does a high AMH result mean?

High AMH means there are many small follicles in the ovaries; it is common at a young age and may be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Young age (naturally high egg reserve)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Higher risk of over-response during IVF treatment
  • Rarely, granulosa cell tumors of the ovary

What does a low AMH result mean?

Low AMH means a reduced egg reserve and falls naturally with age. Low AMH does not mean you cannot get pregnant and does not reflect egg quality.

  • Increasing age (natural decline)
  • Birth control pills (temporary decrease)
  • Smoking
  • Ovarian surgery or endometrioma (chocolate cyst)
  • After chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency or approaching menopause

My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?

AMH can be tested on any day of the cycle and is read with age, ultrasound follicle count and FSH. Biotin supplements can affect some assays; discuss pregnancy plans with your doctor.

Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
