What is this test?
ALT is an enzyme found mainly in liver cells. When liver cells are damaged, it leaks into the blood and its level rises. It is used to investigate fatty liver, hepatitis and drug-induced liver injury.
When is it requested?
Differential diagnosis of liver and bile duct diseases
What does a high ALT result mean?
A high ALT indicates stress or damage to liver cells; the most common cause is fatty liver, and mild rises are often temporary.
- Fatty liver and excess weight
- Strenuous exercise or muscle injury (mild rise)
- Medicines and herbal products (e.g., painkillers, some antibiotics, supplements)
- Alcohol use
- Viral hepatitis (hepatitis B, C, A)
- Celiac disease or thyroid disorders
- Less commonly, autoimmune hepatitis or inherited liver diseases
My result is outside the reference range. What should I do?
For mild rises, your doctor may repeat the test in a few weeks; avoid strenuous exercise in the days before testing. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Reference ranges depend on the method, age and sex; always use the range printed on your report. This information is for general guidance only; consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
